Back in December, in the boxing hot-spot of Manchester, Kal Yafai put on a display of boxing skills that saw him become the WBA super-flyweight champion.
Yafai, taking on the Panama fighter, Luis Concepcion, took the belt courtesy of a unanimous decision.
Yesterday it was announced that the 27-year-old will make his first defence of his title in May.
More importantly for Yafai, the defence will take place in his home city of Birmingham with Yafai not only being the first world champion the city has produced but the first to defend a world title in the city.
The bout, against an as yet unnamed opponent, will take place at the Barclaycard Arena on May 13th.
Speaking about the event Yafai is quoted as having remarked,
‘It’s a dream come true to be topping the bill in Birmingham as a world champion.
‘I want to prove that I can mix it with the top guys in the division and I need to kick my reign off in style in May to do that.’
Yafai currently has a record that reads 21-0, hopefully he?ll extend that record to 22-0 when he fights in his home city on May 13th, thereby retaining his WBA super-flyweight title.
