Last night, in Manchester, Khalid Yafai became the latest British fighter to become a world champion.

Yafai, with a convincing performance, claimed the vacant WBA super flyweight title with a convincing win over Luis Concepcion.

Ahead of the bout Concepcion had been stripped of his title after failing to make the weight, with the WBA declaring the title vacant but with only Yafai being able to claim it.

Yafai started the fight extremely well with his technique proving perfect at out-witting Concepcion and building up a good points lead. The second half of the fight was a lot scruffier with Yafai forcing the issue but with both boxers tiring the action became more of a struggle with the fluidity interrupted by holding.

However, at the sound of the bell for the end of the twelfth round there was only ever going to be one winner with the judges awarding the fight to Yafai by the following points? scores:

? 120 ? 108
? 119 ? 108
? 117 ? 110

The victory takes Yafai?s record to 21-0 with 14 wins coming by KO whilst Concepcion sees his record slip to 35-5 with 24 wins coming by way of stoppage.

Our congratulations go to Khalid Yafai on becoming the latest British fighter to become a world champion.
