Yesterday we reported on how the Russian fighter Alexander Povetkin had, during a routine drugs test, tested positive for the banned substance meldonium.

Although Povetkin only had minimal traces of the banned substance in his system, the fact that the substance found in his blood, meldonium, had been banned since January 2016, put the World Boxing Council in an awkward position, should the fight go-ahead or should it be called off?

Last night the WBC, in our opinion, took the correct decision when the WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed, via the social network site Twitter, the fight would not take place as scheduled on May 21st (next weekend).

Obviously this is disappointing for all parties concerned but more so for Deontay Wilder who has made the journey across from his homeland, the US, to take on the challenger in his own backyard.

Now whether the fight will be rescheduled of whether Povetkin will be forced to serve a ban remains to be seen.
