In Birmingham, Alabama, last night the WBC world heavyweight title holder, Deontay Wilder, made a triumphant return to the ring.

Having recovered from surgery to his arm and hand following a successful defence against Chris Arreloa, Wilder showed that his punching power is still phenomenal.

Matched against Gerald Washington, a fighter who was, ahead of this bout, unbeaten, Wilder finished off the fight in the fifth round when a right-left combination put Washington on the canvas.

Talking to the media after the successful defence of his belt, Wilder remarked,

‘I’m still here.

‘We’re going to keep the fights coming.’

Wilder, after the knockout last night, takes his professional record to 38-0 with 37 of those wins coming by way of knockout, whilst Washington sees his record slip to 19-1.

For Wilder the prospect of unifying the division drives him on and it seems that he wants the WBO belt next, meeting the winner of the clash between Joseph Parker and Hughie Fury, with Wilder adding,

‘I am ready for Joseph Parker. Are they ready for me?’

Exciting times ahead for the heavyweight division.
