After the farcical scoring in Kiel, at the Paul Smith v Arthur Abraham WBO world middleweight title fight, the hopes were that the WBO would order a re-match.

Smith?s promoter, Eddie Hearn, had petitioned the WBO with a view to getting a re-match as soon as possible but tweets coming from the WBO president Parco Valcarcel indicate that the petition has been received in a negative way.

Tweets published include:-

‘Resolution on #AbrahamSmith to be notified on Monday. Rematch petition is DENIED. What caused controversy was margin of scores, not result.’

‘Furthermore, due to @PaulSmithJnr’s inspired performance Championship Committee recommends he retain his Top 5 position in the WBO Rankings.’

‘More on #AbrahamSmith, we are the first ones to condemn scoring of this fight, particularly Laguna’s outrageous 119-109 for Abraham card.?

As for Smith?s reaction, he has tweeted,

‘Gutted that the WBO aren’t making a straight rematch. I do believe I’ll get the rematch voluntarily, though. I’ve proved I belong up here.’

Let?s hope that is the case and that Paul?s dalliance with the world title scene isn?t just a one off!
