Last night, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, George Groves was supposed to capture the WBC super-middleweight title, against Badou Jack.

After losing his two previous world title attempts, at the hands of the recently retired Carl Froch, many perceived that last night would see the Hammersmith fighter finally claim a world title belt.

But it wasn?t to be.

Instead Groves was the victim of a split-decision verdict which saw Badou hang on to his crown.

Groves started the fight poorly, getting floored by Jack in the opening round, however Groves fought back well and by the halfway mark the fight was level.

The second half of the fight saw Jack land the more solid blows but purists might suggest that Groves landed a greater quantity.

After the decision was read out, Groves didn?t wait for the after-fight formalities to be carried out, instead he stormed out of the ring obviously disapproving of the points verdicts that went against him.

But, when you are up against a stable-mate of Floyd Mayweather Junior and fighting on Mayweather?s turf, don?t you have to knock your opponent out to get a draw?

  • Groves didn’t do enough to win it. He came up short, twice against Froch and now against Jack. He’s still young enough to bounce back but needs to be honest with himself and go back to the drawing board.
