This Saturday night there is a feast of boxing for us connoisseurs of the sport with both Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren promoting shows.
Hearn has a show at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham whilst Warren has a show at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.
On the Leeds show Josh Warrington will be taking on a difficult opponent in the shape of the Spanish former super-bantamweight world champion Kiko Martinez.
Warrington is hoping that a win, over a fighter who has only lost to the best in the business, will propel him towards a showdown with the IBF world featherweight champion Lee Selby.
There appears to be very little love lost between Warrington and Selby with Warrington remarking about the Welsh fighter,
‘The fight and animosity have been stewing for a while and I’m very eager to prove my doubters wrong.
‘Last year, Selby was red-hot favourite as the world champion I’d challenge. It didn’t happen, but the fight’s certainly not dead.
‘He gives me no credit. Let’s just settle it.’
Fighting words from the Leeds United supporter.
But Warrington continues, further adding,
‘He thinks he’s a banger when he’s not. He puts far too much into his punches then fades.’
However, before Warrington gets too engrossed in a potential match-up with Selby, he should remember that Martinez will be no walk in the park.
The Spaniard has had 44 fights losing just 7 but amongst those defeats are those at the hands of Carl Frampton, Scott Quigg and Leo Santa Cruz, three boxers who have held or hold world title belts.
