Warrington Retains WBC International Title

At the First Direct Arena, in Leeds last night, the popular Leeds fighter Josh Warrington stretched his unbeaten record to 23-0.

Matched against the 30-year-old Japanese fighter Hisashi Amagasa, Warrington put on a polished display to take the contest on the sore-cards of all three judges.

However, the scorecard of one judge, who gave Warrington every single round didn?t do the Japanese boxer any credit for what was a decent performance.

In fact, Amagasa, freakishly tall for a featherweight, may have lost all the early rounds but he came on strong in the middle rounds giving Warrington plenty to think about.

However, fighting under pressure, Warrington turned the tide with a big punch in the ninth round that halted any further serious advances from the Japanese fighter.

The win ensured Warrington retained his WBC International featherweight title, but perhaps Amagasa?s annoyance at the wide margin on one card was the reason he left the ring as soon as possible after the verdict had been announced, almost sprinting to his dressing room.

The win saw, in the post-fight interview, Warrington demand a shot against the IBF world featherweight champion, Lee Selby with Warrington remarking,

‘I think when that comes round I’ve got what it takes to beat him.

‘I’m desperate to chase that world title but need to polish up on a few things first.’

Back in the safety of the Sky Sports studio, the Welsh IBF featherweight champion dismissed Warrington as not even being world-class, I get the impression this is a clash that will smoulder and smoulder until they do get in the same ring together.
