Those who stayed up through the night to watch the under-card of the Alvarez v Cotto promotion would have witnessed a brutal encounter between Francisco Vargas and Takashi Miura.

The fight for the WBC super-featherweight title was a brutal encounter that was eventually won by the Mexican Vargas.

Vargas had to survive the first knockdown of his career to continue in the fight and when the Mexican picked up cuts both above and below his right eye, it looked to be only matter of time before his Japanese opponent stopped him.

However, 30-year-old Vargas refused to give in and drove himself forward, blinking through the stream of running blood to stop his opponent in the ninth round.

Following the brutal fight Vargas kept his uneaten record which has now stretched to twenty-three fights whilst his opponent now has thirty-two wins and two defeats from his thirty-four fights.
