Last night, the World Boxing Super Series, cruiserweight division, grabbed our attention.
Although, due to the involvement of a healthy British contingent, the super-middleweight tournament is utmost in our thoughts, the cruiserweight version is providing some decent entertainment.
Meeting in the semi-finals of the competition, in Latvia, were the WBO world cruiserweight champion Oleksander Usyk and the WBC world title holder Maris Briedis.
In what was a close fight, it was Usyk that took the verdict with the judges scoring the fight:
? 115 ? 113 (in favour of Usyk)
? 114 ? 114 (a draw)
And
? 115 ? 113 (in favour of Usyk)
The win sees Usyk claim both the WBO and WBC belts and he will now contest the final of the competition against the winner of the other semi-final between the IBF champion Murat Gassiev and the WBA champion Yunier Dorticos, in a fight that will provide the division with a four belt world champion.
The final is expected to be contested in May.
