2014 hasn?t been the best of years for the Liverpool fighter Rocky Fielding.
In fact some might say it has been a year that he?d rather forget and a year that has been a major disappointment.
Fielding finished 2013 tipped as a rising star after all he?d just won the Commonwealth title and defended it in spectacular fashion.
Therefore many thought 2014 would be the year that catapulted Fielding to stardom, but ti didn?t turn out that way.
The super-middleweight committed the cardinal sin of coming to the weigh-in against Charles Adamu, not a few ounces over weight but a massive seven pound. Although he won the fight, he was stripped of his Commonwealth title and lost his position as the mandatory challenger to Paul Smith for the British title.
After getting his reputation somewhat back on track with a fifth round stoppage over Noe Gonzalez Alcoba a fighter who had boxed with the best in the division, Fielding looked set for good things. Sadly a hand injury interrupted proceedings and 2014 was a wash-out.
However, with 2015 now on the horizon, Fielding once again has his eyes on making up for lost time as he attempts to climb up the super-middleweight rankings and the man in his targets is, once again, Paul Smith.
Fielding is of the opinion that Smith will lose in his second fight with Arthur Abraham, for the world title, and that a fight between Smith and himself would be huge box office, or as Fielding succinctly puts it,
?I?m ranked with the IBF, WBO and WBA, so I could go down any of those routes. Whichever is the best option in the New Year, we?ll take. But it?s Paul Smith that I want. Whether it?s for the British title or not, that?s the fight I want.?
Continuing, Fielding confirms that there is no love lost between the two, further adding,
?I just don?t like him. He has never given me any credit whenever I?ve fought. Plus it?d be massive in Liverpool. It?d definitely sell out the Echo Arena.?
It probably would, but first we await Fielding?s first appearance of 2015 when he?s expected to fight on the undercard of Kell Brooks first defence of his world welterweight title.
It?ll be great to have you back Rocky.
