On this day back in 1987, Lloyd Honeyghan set a record for what was then the fastest knockout in a world title fight.

Defending his world welterweight title Honeyghan, fighting in Marbella in Spain; knocked out the American fighter Gene Hatcher in just 45 seconds.

Honeyghan had won the title on 27th September 1986 when he took on the feared Don ?The Cobra? Curry.

Not many pundits gave Honeyghan a chance but the London fighter stunned everyone by giving Curry a beating forcing the champion to quit on his stall at the end of the sixth round.

Honeyghan was so confident he could pull off what many perceived as the impossible that he placed a bet of £5,000, at odds of 5-1, to beat the American.

At the time Honeyghan?s chances were rated as so slim that many bookmakers wouldn?t take money on a Curry win.

The only unfortunate bit about the whole history making fight was that the fight took place in a showroom at the Caesars Atlantic City Hotel Casino with only around a 1,000 people watching it.

Perhaps, as his fight against Gennady Golovkin draws nearer, Kell Brook can take heart from what Lloyd Honeyghan achieved.
