The spectacular way in which Josh Taylor dismantled Ohara Davies on Saturday night, at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow, has highlighted the 26-year-old as a possible world champion of the future.
In stopping the unbeaten Davies, in round seven, the Scottish fighter retained his Commonwealth super-lightweight title and took his professional record to 10-0.
Following the bout, Taylor tried his utmost into goading Ricky Burns, who was sat ringside, into an all-Scottish mega-fight.
Talking about such a meeting, Taylor remarked to the media,
‘I would want it. It would be a great fight for Scottish boxing and Scottish fans.
‘I think it would sell out any arena. It would be a massive fight.’
It certainly would and Taylor, after the win, is now ranked in the top 15 by the WBC.
Managed by Barry McGuigan, Tyalor looks destined for the top something which the Clones Cyclone profused about in talking to the media after the bout, with McGuigan remarking about his charge,
‘He has fought on three world title fight bills, he’s fought in America three times, he’s won the Commonwealth title in his seventh fight. This kid is a superstar.
‘He has the ability to win a world title at light-welterweight and welterweight.
‘Ricky Burns won’t beat Josh Taylor. That sounds very pompous of me but he won’t beat him.
‘I have talked about how much I admire him and how much I like his humility. He is a fabulous guy and the only Scottish fighter to win titles at three weight divisions, but he won’t beat Josh Taylor, not now.
‘The reality is he is just starting to go over the edge and Taylor is on the way up.
‘You haven’t seen the best of Taylor. I thought he was vicious, nasty, clinical, took plenty of shots but most of them on his hands, boxed extremely intelligently, but that is what he is about.’
On the evidence of Saturday night, Taylor will soon be moved up to fight better and more dangerous fighters than Ohara Davies, then we?ll see just how good the fighter is.
