Boxing can be a cruel sport but none more so than when of the combatants suffers an injury that becomes life altering.

Although the strictest of medical standards are upheld, the nature of the sport will always carry a threat.

Last weekend, over in New York, there was a heavyweight contest that enthralled all those that watched it.

Mike Perez took on an emerging Russian heavyweight by the name of Magomed Abdusalamov with the latter entering the ring with a very healthy record of 18-0.

The contest went the full 10 rounds with Perez taking the decision on points.

After the contest, Abdusalamov was taken ill and found to have a blood clot on his brain. It is now being subsequently reported that following surgery the Russian suffered a stroke and is currently on a life support system in intensive care at the Roosevelt Hospital in New York.

Unfortunately, as can be the case in such circumstances, the medical bills are rising by the day, although no fee has been made public yet.

Interestingly, despite giving such a good account of himself before the tragedy took hold, the Russian?s purse was a mere $40,000. I hope those involved in the promotion are doing the decent thing.
