On Saturday night, in Monte Carlo, the Liverpool fighter and one of the four boxing Smith brothers, Stephen, failed in his attempt to win a world title.
Smith came up short against the American fighter, Jason Sosa, losing the fight on all three of the judge?s scorecards.
However, Smith put up a gallant show, overcoming a second round knockdown and a cut above his right eye, to rally and cause the champion problems in the latter rounds.
For Smith, it was a second failure to win a world title and at 31-years of age the Liverpudlian knows that age could soon be a deciding factor in his career.
To that effect Smith is hoping that the American will agree to a re-match, quite possibly in Liverpool, with Smith remarking after the fight on Saturday night,
?I?m so disappointed but Sosa came in the dressing room after and said he?d love to do it again. I?d love it to be in Liverpool.?
Now we?re sure Stephen would welcome another crack at Sosa, even more when it could be on home soil but, after two world title attempts in the space of seven months, he?ll probably have to bide his time unless Eddie Hearn can have a quiet word in somebodies ear but then it really would see Stephen Smith in the last chance saloon world title wise!
