And so the chance of a lifetime, for Paul Smith, is almost upon us.
Saturday night, over in Germany, as we?ve already mentioned this week, will see the popular Liverpool fighter take on Arthur Abraham for the WBO super-middleweight title.
Smith has been given this opportunity despite suffering, earlier in his career, crushing losses to both James DeGale and George Groves.
The Liverpool fighter is realistic enough to accept that, at the age of thirty-one, this will be his first and last opportunity to fight for the world title, with Smith remarking on the eve of his big night,
‘This is my first and last chance to become world champion.?
‘I will not let this opportunity slip through my hands.’
‘I have had the best training camp ever and my coach Joe Gallagher has devised the perfect game-plan.?
‘Now it is up to me. I’m going to grab this opportunity and the title with both hands!”
Whilst Abraham, who has won his last four fights, remains the favourite for the fight Smith, who has 34 victories from 37 fights, is confident of springing an upset.
I?ll certainly be tuning in tomorrow night to see Smith give it his all, let?s hope he does cause the upset he believes he can!
