At the Liverpool Echo Arena, last night, the super-middleweight version of the World Boxing Super Series got underway.
The first fight in the competition, a quarter-final, saw Callum Smith face the Swedish fighter Erik Skoglund.
Entering the fight, both fighters had unbeaten records and the bout was to prove to be a tough one that went the full twelve rounds.
After the sound of the bell, the scorecards were announced as:
? 116 ? 112
? 117 ? 110
? 117 ? 111
All in favour of Callum Smith, who is now unbeaten in twenty-three fights.
The contest saw Smith receive a bloodied nose courtesy of Skoglund?s punching but the turning point of the encounter came in the eleventh round when Skoglund was caught by a big left-hook and hit the canvas.
The win moves Callum Smith into the semi-finals of the competition where he will face the winner of the quarter-final between the German Juergen Braehmer and the American Rob Grant, who meet in Stuttgart on 7 October.
