After seeing a defence of his IBF world-featherweight crown cancelled in Las Vegas, on the under-card of the Santa Cruz v Frampton fight, at the MGM Grand Arena, Lee Selby was given permission, by the IBF, to take a non-title fight and remain active last night.
Boxing very early on, on the undercard of the Haye v Bellew fight at the 02 Arena, Selby was matched against the Spaniard Andoni Gago in a ten-round encounter.
With the 02 Arena yet to full up it looked a case of bad match-making when Selby floored Gago in the first round.
But the Spaniard rose to his feet and although he was nothing more than a punch-bag for Selby, he managed to last until the final round when, with the final bell approaching, the referee stopped in to halt the bout.
Selby got the win but the big question arose as to whether, with talk of a world title showdown with Carl Frampton, Selby has the power to hurt the Irishman.
