Over in Minsk, continuing our coverage of the European Championships, we?re pleased to report that one of our boxers has struck gold.

Earlier this week we reported how three of our best amateurs had progressed to the medal stages and were assured of at least a bronze medal. Unfortunately, both Joe Joyce and Jack Bateson lost their semi-final bouts but Andrew Selby powered into the final and in that final scooped gold beating Michael Conlan, of Ireland, on a split decision.

In beating Conlan to secure the gold medal, Selby set a record as being the first British fighter to successfully defend a European amateur title, a remarkable achievement and one he should be proud of.
