The night Lee Selby won the IBF featherweight crown against the Russian fighter, Evgeny Gradovich, was the night the Welsh fighter finally arrived on the world scene.

That night Selby fought the perfect fight and his world title triumph was a rich reward for the hard work Selby has put into a career that has often come up against obstacles not of the fighters making.

However, if Selby?s fans were hoping to see his first defence here in the United Kingdom they are going to be disappointed.

After signing up with the influential American advisor Al Haymon, it was perhaps inevitable that Selby?s first fight would see him make his debut in the United States.

It has been announced that Selby will make his first defence f his IBF featherweight title against the former champion Fernando Montiel, on October 14th.

The fight will be staged at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona with Selby fighting on Haymon?s Premier Boxing Champions series.

Montiel, we believe, shouldn?t prove too much of a test for Selby and the fight will give him some valuable exposure in the United States, something that can only be of benefit to the Welshman?s career.
