At the O2 Arena last night, Lee Selby faced a monumental task in ripping the IBF featherweight belt from the unbeaten Russian, Evgeny Gradovich.
But ahead of the fight the popular Welshman had promised that would be exactly what he would do and in the best performance of his career so far he did just that.
Talking to the media after becoming the new champion of the world, Selby remarked,
‘I can’t explain how I feel. I’ve been working for this for so long. I had my first amateur fight nearly 20 years ago.
‘I caught him and he wobbled. I was going to break him down and put on a show for the fans. We had two accidental clash of heads but I’d won every round up until then.
‘It’s amazing. I’ve got all my friends and family here, they’ve all driven down from South Wales. When my brother passed away in 2008 that was the point I turned my life around. I turned professional I used to be up to no good before that to be honest. If I could do that anybody can do it.
?I’ll go home and have a fizzy water because I’m not allowed alcohol.’
Getting to the top is hard, they say staying there is even harder still, let?s hope that Lee Selby has the long reign the performance he gave last night deserves.
