Although, Lee Selby made a successful defence of his IBF featherweight belt in Arizona, on Wednesday night, it wasn?t the sort of performance produced that Selby wanted.

The aim of going to the US was to provide a sparkling display, impress the American public and take the next step to becoming a world star.

But his opponent, for that first defence, Fernando Montiel, was far too experienced to simply let Selby control the fight and give the boxing exhibition Selby had hoped would be the outcome.

Although Selby got the unanimous decision Selby was honest enough to admit after the fight,

?The fans didn?t see me at my best. I was honestly disappointed but at least I got the win.?

Fighting a shorter man as was the case with Montiel, can have its disadvantages and Selby was quick to comment on the cut Montiel inflicted, remarking to the media,

?My cuts are all from shorter fighters. In the sixth, it was the usual ? a head-butt.

?It?s great to win but it was hard, that?s down to Montiel?s determination and experience.?

They say winning a world title is hard but they also say holding on to it is even harder, Selby will be all the better for his US trip and now he?ll know that the calibre of opposition put in front of him will be of the highest class.
