Low down the undercard on what a thrilling night of boxing at the O2 Arena, the Commonwealth lightweight title was up for grabs.

Dave Ryan, the current holder of the belt was up against John Wayne Hibbert.

In a thrilling encounter in which both men were on the canvas twice the referee stepped in to save Hibbert from further punishment in the ninth round.

Ryan had delivered and retained his title.

After the bout a relieved Ryan had this to say about the fight and his valiant opponent,

?I?ve got a big heart, put it that way.

?It was a great fight and he caught me with a cracking body shot.

?He hurt me every round ? he?s a strong kid. I felt like I was getting through with my shots, though.

?I?ve created a lot more power and now I am just going to keep on winning.?

It was indeed a cracking fight and it remains to be seen how far Ryan can go in this division.
