In Cardiff, on Saturday night, Gavin Rees bid farewell to Boxing with a revenge win over his rival Gary Buckland.

Before the contest Rees had indicated this was to be his farewell fight and the 34 year-old was true to his word.

Rees started the bout slowly with the younger Buckland taking the early rounds, however, once Rees settled into his stride the work-rate of the older man saw Rees establish a lead.

Although Rees suffered a bloody nose in the fourth round and picked up a cut eye in round eleven he took the verdict with a split decision with the judges scoring the contest:-

? 117 ? 113 (for Rees)

117 ? 112 (for Rees)

116 ? 113 (for Buckland)

Following the fight, Rees confirmed his retirement with the remark,

?I?m calling it a day. I?m 34.?

We may have seen the last of Gavin Rees in the ring but I?ve feeling that the former WBA light-welterweight champion might appear in one guise or another in the sport.

Thanks for the memories Gavin.
