Faced with a late change of opponent Scott Quigg made a successful defence of his WBA super-bantamweight title in Manchester last night.
Defending his belt against Tshifhiwa Munyai, the Bury fighter demolished his opponent in two superb rounds.
Entering the ring to a barrage of noise Quigg had Munyai on the canvas in round one with a stunning left hook. Munyai struggled to his feet, beating the count and was, in all probability, saved by the bell.
However Quigg, sensing an early stoppage, jumped on his man at the start of the second round and this time a right hand put Munyai on the canvas. The challenger got to his feet but the referee, Howard Foster, stepped in when Munyai was being peppered with shots, to save the challenger from further punishment.
Following the fight Quigg had a few words to say about his performance, remarking,
‘He took the fight at late notice but I demolished him.?
‘I wanted to make a statement and I said you were going see the best of Scott Quigg.’
‘No-one has ever done that to Munyai.’
The win was Quigg?s third defence of his title and it remains to be seen where he heads next, a unification fight possibly!
