After, deservedly, getting the split decision, Carl Frampton gave the media his thoughts on the fight against Scott Quigg.
Now the IBF and WBA super-bantamweight champion, Frampton remarked,
‘The travelling support has been unbelievable – this isn’t Manchester, is it? Seems like it is Belfast.
‘I couldn’t believe it was a spilt [decision]. I don’t know what that lad was watching. He needs to take a long hard look at himself.?
And as for the fight being far from a classic, Frampton added,
‘I knew it was going to be a boring fight – I had to sell it for TV. I knew I had the brain to do that and make it boring.’
And on a re-match or simply moving on to bigger and better things, Frampton further added,
‘If I have to have a rematch and the public demands it, no problem.
‘But I’d rather move on to bigger and better things. The world’s our oyster.’
Continuing on what is next for Frampton, his manager, Barry McGuigan, had this to say,
‘We need to step it up to another level.
‘Leo Santa Cruz [Mexico’s WBA featherweight champion] is an obvious fight.
‘Unlike Scott Quigg, Santa Cruz lets go, he’s not afraid to commit. He’s a volume puncher, walks you down and that would be a fabulous money fight.
‘It would be great if we could get him over here. Belfast would be wonderful. And maybe we could do the rematch at Madison Square Garden.’
To me it looks as if a Frampton v Quigg II is not going to happen, but after last night I doubt whether the public would lap a re-match up with as much anticipation as they did for the fight last night!
