The last time Scott Quigg was in a ring he lost his WBA super-bantamweight world title to Carl Frampton.
The Bury fighter also picked up a broken jaw that saw him side-lined for longer than he would have wanted.
Last night, on the under-card at the Manchester Arena, Quigg made his return to the ring as a featherweight.
His opponent last night was the tough and rugged Mexican Jose Cayetano, a fighter who had never been stopped.
The fight, an entertaining encounter, saw most rounds follow the same pattern. Quigg would have Cayetano trapped on the ropes unleashing powerful punches whilst the Mexican flicked away with some stinging but unorthodox shots.
Quigg was catching Cayetano with some powerful shots but the Mexican was a tough cookie who refused to buckle.
But, just as it looked as if Quigg would have to settle for a points win, in the 9th round the Bury fighter produced a right hand to the head that saw Cayetano drop to the canvas.
The referee, Terry O?Conner, stopped the fight once it became obvious that Cayetano was too hurt to continue.
Quigg had gotten his victory courtesy of an accumulation of punches that had worn his opponent down.
The victory takes Quigg?s record to 32-1-2 with 24 wins coming by way of stoppage whilst Cayetano sees his slip to 20-5 with 9 wins coming by way of knockout.
Having been a world champion, it?ll be interesting how quickly Eddie Hearn can manoeuvre his boxer towards a title tilt.
