Unfortunately the career of the former British welterweight champion, Lee Purdy, has come to an end.
The 27-year old, who once fought Devon Alexander for the IBF welterweight world title, before being withdrawn in the 7th round after a gallant effort, has been forced to retire after losing the vision in his left eye.
Purdy sustained damage to the eye back in December 2013, following a fight with Leonard Bundu. A series of operations hasn?t cured the problem and the fighter has no option other than to call it a day.
It?s not known if the vision problem in his left eye is permanent with Purdy remarking that it could be eighteen months before he knows the permanent status of the eye.
During his career Purdy, from Colchester, won the British welterweight title in 2011 and added the IBF international belt.
Forced into retirement, Purdy leaves the sport with a record that reads 20 wins, 5 losses and 1 draw from his 26 bouts.
The sport will be poorer for his absence and here at Vital Boxing we?d like to wish Lee well with regards to what he turns his hand to next.
