British boxing followers will be only too aware of the name Tony Thompson.

The big American has recently twice beaten the British hope, David Price. At the age of forty-one the American had ambitions of fighting for the heavyweight title again, after twice having lost to Wladimir Klitschko twice already.

But those ambitions are now over.

Last night, in a final eliminator Thompson took on the current European heavyweight champion Kunrat Pulev. The Bulgarian heavyweight has ambitions of his own of going into the ring with one of the Klitschko brothers and after surviving the first four rounds against Thompson, moved up a gear or two to take the verdict from all three judges with the scoring being as thus ? 116-112, 118-110 and 117-111.

Whilst I can?t see Pulev causing either of the Klitschko brothers much concern, I can?t help thinking that David Price could, if he?d have weathered those opening rounds, have taken Thompson apart, but then again a big-puncher always does have a chance doesn?t he!
