Povetkin KO?s Price in Five Rounds

The 80,000 spectators inside the Principality Stadium, in Cardiff, were willing David Price to pull off an upset and beat the former WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin, but it wasn?t to be.

The Liverpool heavyweight, given a surprise chance to become the WBA mandatory challenger to the title held by Anthony Joshua, was brutally knocked out in the fifth round of the contest.

However, 34-year-old Price was far from disgraced in his attempts to pull off the improbable.

The fight sprung into life in the third round when Price was put on the canvas by Povetkin by a left-hook.

The punch opened up a cut above the eye of Price and the Liverpudlian beat the canvas in frustration at making the error that allowed him to be caught.

But, just as you expected Povetkin to move in for the kill, Price produced two punches of his own that caught the Russian flush and as he staggered across the ring, only the ropes kept the 38-year-old from hitting the deck.

Unfortunately, the punch came too late in the round for Price to capitalise on.

Emerging for the fourth round on wobbly legs, Price patiently waited for the opportunity to catch Povetkin again, but the opportunity never arose.

Round five saw the end of the fight though when Price walked on to a punch and with his hands dropping down by his side, Povetkin took the opportunity to unleash a brutal left-hook that saw Price out cold before he hit the canvas.

After receiving medical help, in the ring, Price was able to leave the ring of his own accord, much to the relief of those inside the vast stadium.

For Povetkin the win opens up a chance to fight for the world title again, for Price it could now be the end of the road as far as his career goes.
