In Moscow last night; the Russian fighter Alexander Povetkin; made short work of his opponent in a WBC heavyweight eliminator.
Povetkin , who now has a record that reads 29-1 with 21 coming by way of knockout, was matched against Mike Perez, who ahead of the fight had a record that read 21-1-1 with 13 coming by way of knockout.
The fight was tipped as going a long way, quite possibly the full twelve rounds, but Povetkin had other ideas, taking his opponent out in a first round knockout after flooring Perez twice.
Povetkin now becomes the mandatory challenger for the WBC version of the belt, currently held by Deontay Wilder, the big-hitting American knockout sensation.
Following the win, Wilder set the seeds for his first mandatory defence by using the social network to remark,
?Congratulations to #Povetkin on the win? I’m looking forward to having my first mandatory title defense. #BombZquad?
Whether Povetkin can trouble Wilder in the same manner he flattened Perez remains to be seen, I hugely doubt it.
