In the early hours of Sunday morning, UK time, Manny Pacquiao reacquainted himself with that feeling of being a world title holder again.
The 37-year-old Philippine fighter won the WBO welterweight crown when he beat the highly rated Jessie Vargas in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao took the decision on a points verdict with the referees scoring the fight as thus:
? 114 ? 113 (for Pacquiao)
? 118 ? 109 (for Pacquiao)
? 118 ? 109 (for Pacquiao)
?
For Pacquiao, who has formerly been an eight-division world champion, it was a significant statement considering he had officially retired after beating Timothy Bradley, back in March.
Pacquiao?s performance was acknowledged by his old adversary, Floyd Mayweather Junior, who was sat ringside. Mayweather giving the fighter the ?thumbs-up? from his ringside seat.
Naturally Pacquiao?s win has re-ignited the clamour for another fight with Mayweather Junior but whether it will happen or not remains to be seen.
Indeed Pacquiao?s response when asked was a simple,
‘We’ll see.’
With regards to the fight, Pacquiao was on top throughout and it looked as if he was going to force a stoppage when Vargas hit the canvas in the second round but Vargas recovered to finish the round.
Pacquiao continued to force the pace and although Vargas was willing to take punches to unload some on the Filipino fighter, he was always behind on points.
An accidental clash of heads saw Vargas receive a cut in the eighth round and Pacquiao showed his still one of the best fighters in the world to cruise to a win that was reflected by the 118 ? 109 two of the three judges opted for.
