Across the pond tonight there is an intriguing catch-weight fight between two boxers who still have aspirations to reach and stay at the summit of the sport.
The fight, made at 144 pounds will see the legend that is Manny Pacquiao take on the unbeaten Chris Algieri. It is a fight that could go either way, in our opinion.
Pacquiao, an eight-weight world champion, has, in the opinion of many, been on the slide in recent times but the 36 year-old appears to have re-grouped and is looking for that elusive fight, if he comes through this one, with Floyd Mayweather Junior.
Talking to the British media, Pacquiao is quoted as having remarked about his career and a possible meeting with Pacquiao,
‘My killer instinct is back and victory will be ours.’
‘I would like it to happen. I’ve told him my phone line is open 24 hours, seven days a week.’
Pacquiao enters this fight with a record that reads 56-5-2 and his trainer, the legendary Freddie Roach, has no doubts as to how the fight will end, commenting to the media about the unbeaten Algieri,,
‘They’re trying to make out like Algieri is the next Rocky. But this isn’t a movie.’
Roach also predicts that his charge will blow his opponent away inside a round. Pacquiao though has a more reserved opinion, insisting,
‘I’m motivated to make a statement by actions, not my words’
‘I’m not predicting the fight but want to entertain people and make it a wonderful fight for the fans.?
‘He’s young, never experienced a loss and that’s why I’m excited because I love to fight undefeated fighters.?
‘I’m not underestimating him, he’s a world champion and I have to focus but the advantage I have is my experience, power and quickness.’
But although Algieri is unbeaten and the current WBO light-welterweight champion, it?s worth pointing out that in gaining the belt he was on the floor twice in the first round of that fight.
