Martin Murray secured a ‘technical decision’ win over Dominic Spada in Monte Carlo at the weekend, which secured him the WBC Silver middleweight title.
This win should have also earned him a shot WBA middleweight Champions Gennady Golovkin.
After seven rounds the fighter was well ahead on the scorecards (67-66, 68-63, 69-67) but with Spada suffering a cut head the referee stepped in and ended the fight in round eight.
This cut was sustained earlier in the fight, with Spada claiming a ‘headbutt’ from Murray had seen him suffer this blow.
What could be viewed as ‘the biggest fight of his career’ could be on the cards for Murray against Golovkin, who has so far fended off nine challengers to his crown, sometime next year?
