The sporting career of Leon McKenzie makes for fascinating reading.
McKenzie, an established footballer who played for nine-clubs, over an 11-year career, including Norwich City and Crystal Palace, switched to a career as a boxer.
After a brutal encounter with Cello Renda, at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, on Saturday night, a fight McKenzie lost, the 39-year-old has decided that enough is enough and he has hung up his gloves.
During his career as a professional fighter, McKenzie had 11 fights, winning 8 of them.
The highlight of his career was undoubtedly challenging for the British super-middleweight title, a fight that didn?t go his way.
But, after losing in his challenge for the British Southern Area title, McKenzie remarked to the media,
‘As much as my mind and heart want to continue, my body won’t allow me, which leaves no choice.
‘On Saturday, I gave it all and left it all in the ring but exhaustion got me. The last few fights my body has bailed on me and I guess 40 years of age crept up on me.
‘I truly hope boxing respects me now as I respect the sport.’
McKenzie is now set to embark on a career helping good causes associated with mental health.
Here at Vital Boxing, we wish him well.
