Faced with a change of opponent in the defence of his WBA world bantamweight title, Jamie McDonnell produced a decent display at the O2 Arena last night.

With the Mexican fighter Fernando Vargas facing him, the bout ebbed and flowed with both fighters having their moments until the fight dramatically exploded into life in the ninth round.

McDonnell caught 27-year-old Vargas with several body-shots before a right-hook saw the brave and very game Vargas slump to his knees in the corner.

Sensing that Vargas had given his all, the referee, Terry O?Conner, called a halt to proceedings with twenty-one seconds of the round left.

Talking to the media afterwards, McDonnell had this to say,

?When I pinned him and let the shots go, he could not take it and folded.?

And when pushed on his next fight, with the likes of Scott Quigg or Carl Frampton being mentioned, McDonnell commented,

?I believe I?ll beat Quigg and Frampton?

Now whether he could is a debatable subject but McDonnell is starting to make something of a name for himself at the moment with his slick skills.
