On the under-card of the Kell Brook v Jo Jo Dan IBF world title fight last night, it proved to be a good night for Gavin McDonnell.
In the 15th professional fight of his career, the lad from Doncaster, produced the goods to take a points decision over the ultra-tough Oleksandr Yegorov.
Cheered on by his partisan support, McDonnel dominated several rounds and at times looked to be on the verge of forcing a stoppage in the middle rounds.
Yegorov looked to be troubled by body-shots from McDonnell but there was never enough of them thrown to force the stoppage.
Several rallies made by Yegorov saw McDonnell walk through them showing resilience and strength that must have discouraged his opponent.
Once the hullaballoo that surrounds the sounding of the last bell had died down it was the arm of McDonnell that was raised in triumph with the judges awarding the fight to McDonnell by the following scores:-
? 117-111
? 118-110
? 118-109
The win now adds the European super-bantamweight belt to the Central Area, British and WBO international crowns already in his possession.
It now remains to be seen just how far McDonnell can go in the professional ranks.
