A couple of weeks ago, on the Eddie Hearn Hull promotion that saw our Olympic Gold medalist, Luke Campbell make his professional debut, there was an intriguing lightweight contest.

Up for grabs was the Commonwealth lightweight belt and in an encounter that thrilled all of those watching, Derry Mathews knocked out Tommy Coyle late on, with a devastating punch.

What made it all the more intriguing was that until he threw that punch Matthews had been very ordinary and Coyle looked to be on the verge of claiming the reference title.

Well it now looks as if we?ll be seeing Matthews in action again when he defends that Commonwealth lightweight title against Curtis Woodhouse, at the Liverpool Olympia, on September 21st.

The bout is given a little further intrigue by the fact that Woodhouse is a former professional footballer looking to make a mark in the professional boxing ranks.

A date for your diary methinks!
