Any chances Adrien Broner had of stepping into Floyd Mayweather?s shoes as the greatest fighter on the planet suffered a huge blow over in Texas last night.

Broner, defending his WBA welterweight title, as well as his unbeaten record, was not only beaten, but outclassed by Marcos Maidana.

Maidana lived up to his pre-fight talk and took a unanimous points decision against the brash 24 year-old American with the judges scoring the fight – 115-110, 116-109, 117-109..

Broner was decked twice by Maidana, hitting the canvas in the second and eighth rounds but was, at times, bullied out of the contest by his challenger.

Not even a point deduction for the challenger after his head caught Broner?s jaw could put the end result in jeopardy and after the fight a joyous Maidana remarked to the media,

‘I had to show a lot of heart to win this fight.’

‘I did what I had to do to win.’

Whereas Broner, having lost his 27 fight unbeaten record, strangely remarked,

?I’m OK. I’m still the three-time world champion in three different weight classes. Maidana was just the better man, but we fought a hell of a fight.?

‘I’m still going to live like we won the fight. I’m still going to party.’

In the build-up we intimated it?d be a close fight, perhaps, just like Broner, we underestimated Maidana who can now look forward to a few decent pay-days defending his title.
