Over in Dublin last night, the plan was that Matthew Macklin would brush aside the challenge presented by Jorge Sebastian Heiland and march on to a fourth world title fight.
Knowing that this was a last chance to fight for a world title, having lost the three previous attempts against Felix Sturm, Sergio Martinez and Gennady Golovkin , Macklin was aware that failure was not an option.
The fight against Heiland was supposed to have taken place earlier this year but was put on hold after Macklin?s trainer, Jamie Moore, was shot in Spain.
Unfortunately Macklin?s career, at world title level, appears to be over after Heiland produced a stunning punch to knockout Macklin in round ten. At the time of the knockout Macklin was behind on the scorecards as his Argentine opponent showcased his resilience, toughness and skills.
Speaking about the devastating loss, Macklin had this to say,
‘I’d been tiring for the three or four rounds before that.?
‘I can’t take anything away from Heiland, he fought a good fight and upped it at the right time.’
‘I’ll have to look at the performance and see where we go from here. I’m not going to make hasty decisions, I feel that at my best, I’m still world class.’
At thirty-two years of age time is running out for Macklin and the realization, when he wakes up this morning, that it is Jorge Sebastian Heiland that will be taking on the Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto for the WBC title will hurt big-time!
