On Friday night at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, Ovill Mackenzie was hoping to produce a performance that would propel him towards a world title shot.

On a Frank Warren promoted bill, Mackenzie had entered the ring believing now was his time and that the media should be concentrating on him rather than the likes of Tony Bellew and Nathan Cleverley.

Defending his British and Commonwealth titles against Matty Askin, Mackenzie believed a good win would see him get a shot at Marcus Huck for a version of the world cruiserweight belt.

As it turned out Mackenzie held on to his belts but had to be content with a split decision, taking the verdict:-

? 116-109
? 115-111
? 113-114

Rather than guaranteeing Mackenzie a world title shot, the split decision leaves it looking far more likely that he?ll be forced into a re-match with Askin.
