Looking to become the first Welshman to win world titles at two different weights, Enzo Maccarinelli was to suffer disappointment in Rostock, Germany last night.
Maccarinelli, taking on the WBA light-heavyweight champion Jurgen Brahmer, slipped to the seventh defeat of his career in a fight that was influenced by a clash of heads in the very first round.
The clash of heads saw the champion cut above his eye but also left Maccarinelli suffering from a swollen eye that was to fast close.
Although the clash appeared accidental, full credit should be given to Brahmer who, with clinical efficiency, continued to pepper the damaged eye with a series of punishing left hooks.
As the fight continued Maccarinelli?s eye shut tight and the swelling bean to spread down his cheek. Knowing his man was in danger of getting seriously hurt, Maccarinelli?s trainer, Gary Lockett, gave him one final round, the fifth, to try and get to the champion but it was to be to no avail with Lockett deciding enough was enough and throwing in the towel at the end of the fifth round.
It remains to be seen where Maccarinelli goes from here, will he box on or will he choose to retire?
