Across the pond, at the Madison Square Garden in New York, the big fight saw Vasyl Lomachenko defend his WBO super-featherweight title against Guillermo Rigondeaux.
The bout was the first time two double Olympic champions had fought each other with Rigondeaux having moved up two weights to take on the Ukrainian.
It was a move fraught with danger as Lomachenko dominated the Cuban. As early as the third round the writing was on the wall that this fight wouldn?t go the distance with the 37-year-old Rigondeaux complaining about a hand injury.
With Lomachenko dominating, Rigondeaux decided that he?d had enough and not only quit the fight but also the sport.
Amazingly, his retirement makes it four opponents on the trot that that have retired after being beaten by the classy Lomachenko.
After the bout, the Ukrainian had this to say about the victory that takes his professional record to 10 wins and 1 defeat,
‘Maybe I should change my second name, now my name is ‘No Mas Chenko?.
‘This is not his weight so it’s not a big win for me.?
Perhaps not but there are many pundits who are now considering Lomachenko to be the best pound-for-pound fight in the business.
