On the Glasgow undercard on Friday night, the fight of the night was between the two light-welterweights Willie Limond and Curtis Woodhouse.
35 year-old Limond defending his Commonwealth title was keen to add Woodhouse?s British title to his collection.
In a fascinating encounter, a fight that went the distance, Limond was to emerge the victor on points, although the margins were a little strange with one judge giving the fight to Limond by eight points whilst another had it all-square.
Limond, who claimed the centre of the ring for the majority of the fight, had Woodhouse on the canvas in the 4th round with an uppercut. The punch came almost on the bell thereby giving the Scot no time to finish the contest.
Although having hit the canvas, Woodhouse continued to try and force the pace and kept busy. However, Limon was clearly boxing to a plan and produced the sharper work. With the fight entering the latter stages Woodhouse started to look tired and his plan of caching Limond with body-punches didn?t appear to be slowing the ageing Scot down.
The final three rounds saw Limond dominate and when the bell finally sounded it was clear that the Scot had become a double-champion.
Talking about his triumph, Limond had this to say,
”I feel I’ve exorcised my demons, it’s taken me 13 years. Curtis pushed me all the way and I needed that to make me perform.?
Whereas a disappointed Woodhouse could only remark,
‘I was desperate to hang on to my British title tonight and i fought the hardest I can.?
‘Willie was the better man and I’ve got no complaints.?
‘I still love the game and it’s raw now but nobody can take away from me that I was British champion.’
It remains to be seen if Woodhouse continues his pugilistic career and as for Limond there are rumours of a European title fight in the offering.
