Boxing is back in the spotlight this weekend when another British fighter is making a brave attempt to upset the odds and win a world title.
Last week, at the O2 Arena in London, Kell Brook went head-to-head with the legendary Gennady Golokin in an attempt to wrestle the multitude of belts the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet holds.
Although Brook put up a spirited attempt, it ended in gallant failure with his corner throwing the towel in after five brutal rounds.
This Saturday evening, over in the US, Liam Smith will be taking on Saul ?Canelo? Alvaraz for the Mexican fighters WBO light-middleweight belt.
Like Golovkin, Canelo is rated amongst the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world and the Liverpool fighter will be hoping to silence the huge crowd expected in Arlington and bring the belt back to the UK.
Unlike Brook, Smith is a natural light-middleweight, he hasn?t gone up two weight divisions and is a recognised world-class operative at light-middleweight, but whether he can dethrone Canelo remains to be seen.
Smith is the second consecutive British fighter Canelo will be facing. Last time out he knocked out Amir Khan who, like Brook, had gone up two weight divisions to take up the challenge.
Talking about realising his dream and beating Canelo, Liam Smith had this to say to the media,
?Me beating Canelo would be special.
?Look at the reaction Brook is getting ? and he got stopped after five rounds. He has come out like a hero.?
Can Liam Smith return a hero and dethrone Canelo, I?m not so sure but I reckon he?s going to put up one hell of a fight.
Liam?s Chance for Glory!
