On the under-card of the Liverpool Echo Arena show, Liam Smith was hoping to showcase his talents further.

Smith was matched against the Argentine fighter, David Ezequiel Romero for the vacant WBO inter-continental super-welterweight title.

As it turned out Smith gave a startling performance to beat the Argentine, having him on the canvas four times.

The bout was a real toe-to-toe affair and Smith scored his first knockdown in round three when a body-shot hurt Romero. There was a sniff of a second knockdown in the round but the referee ruled it to be a blow that had struck below the belt.

The second knockdown came in the fifth round when Smith caught his opponent with a huge upper-cut and a minute later, in the same round, a body and head combination punch put the Argentine fighter on the canvas again.

The fourth knockdown came in round six when another left hook to the body had Romero down, but the Argentine fighter showed how game he was by clambering to his feet and wanting more of the same.

But sense was seen and the action was stopped in round seven with Smith poised to inflict more heavy punishment.

Surely it is now time to move Liam Smith towards the upper echelons of the division.
