The chief support fight on the Manchester under-card last night saw Liam Smith become the first of the four boxing Smith brothers to win a world title.
Twenty-seven year old Smith was matched against the American fighter John Thompson with the pundits not quite sure how he?d fare against the somewhat unknown, unheralded Thompson.
With the home support cheering Smith on it?s probably fair to say that the fighter from New Jersey, Thompson, was ahead after the first half of the fight, although it was very close.
But, in round seven, Liam Smith produced a devastating left-hook that saw Thompson hit the canvas and Smith was proudly proclaimed to be the NEW WBO light-middleweight champion of the world.
After the fight, talking to the ringside supporters, Smith remarked,
‘He was coming apart as the fight wore on, as soon as I got into my rhythm, I got him.
‘It was my type of part the longer it went.
‘It was seven years to the day that I made my professional debut, so I’m so very proud.’
And so are we all Liam, a wonderful night for the Smith family and British Boxing, I?m sure I even saw Frank Warren smiling last night as well.
