Having become the holder of the WBO light-middleweight belt, it would appear that Liam Smith has chosen an awkward rather than uncomfortable first defence.

Smith?s team have opted to take on the unbeaten Jimmy Kelly and the bout will now feature on what will be a double world-title bill, at the Manchester Arena, on December 19th, with the other fight on the bill being the long awaited WBO fight between Andy Lee and Billy Joe Saunders.

Smith, unbeaten as a professional, remains supremely confident about the outcome of his first defence, simply remarking,

?I?m entering the prime of my career and I?m not going to let an upstart like Kelly anywhere near my title. This belt is leaving with me.?

And here?s one pundit who isn?t prepared to argue against that as the Smith family from Liverpool continue to make waves in world boxing.
