Over in New York tonight, Andy Lee makes the first defence of his WBO middleweight crown.

The Irish fighter silenced his critics by snatching the crown off of the highly ranked Matt Korobov after his opponent this evening, Peter Quillin, opted out of a fight with him.

Lee boxed superbly that night and rightfully took the crown.

Having won the title it was assumed that Lee would fight the mandatory challenger, Billy Joe Saunders who had earned that position after a split decision win over Chis Eubank Junior.

But the mandatory challenger was, we presume, paid to wait for his opportunity and Lee will lock horns with Quillin this evening.

It has all the makings of a tough fight but one which, I feel, could go either way.

Hopefully, tomorrow, we?ll be reporting on a successful first defence of his title for Andy Lee.
