Over in Las Vegas just down the road from the MGM Grand, at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Andy Lee claimed the WBO middleweight title in spectacular style.
Fighting for the vacant belt, against the Russian Matt Korobov, Lee stopped his man in the sixth round.
In his 36th contest, Lee fulfilled a dream by beating Korobov to the punch, pushing him back with his attacks and then finally nailing his man in the sixth.
The end came when Lee caught his man with a right hook and when Korobov backed off Lee followed up with a series of punches that left the Russian wobbling and forcing the fight referee, Kenny Bayliss, to stop the bout.
Having claimed the belt, it is being suggested that his first defence will be a domestic tear-up with the Hatfield fight, Billy Joe Saunders who earned a shot at the title with his recent hard-fought victory over Chris Eubank Junior, a fight he won on a split decision.
For Korobov the defeat was the first of his career with his record now reading 24-1 whilst the win took Lee?s record to 34-2 with 24 of those wins coming by way of knockout.
Our congratulations go to Andy Lee on his success on what turned out to be a wonderful night for British boxing in Las Vegas.
